No ano de 2011, o projeto Per fumum foi ativado no dia 06 de janeiro — o dia em que tradicionalmente os católicos celebram a visita dos Reis magos ao menino Jesus —, como uma ação de defumação com incensos, ao longo da Rua Senhor dos Passos. Essa rua peatonal de comércio está situada em um dos maiores centros comerciais a céu aberto do mundo, localizado no centro histórico do Rio de Janeiro. Essa área muito popular, que data do período do Brasil colonial, foi ocupada ao longo das centenas de anos por comerciantes árabes de origem muçulmana, judeus, coreanos, chineses, entre outras nacionalidades; nela ainda subsistem 5 igrejas católicas, algumas delas erguidas por irmandades negras e mantidas por ex-escravizados. As reações dos transeuntes foram as mais diversas possíveis, pelo menos as que pudemos aferir.

Não é necessário professar alguma fé religiosa para se reconhecer o perfume que provém da fumaça dos incensos. Entretanto, os seres humanos ao longo de milênios se relacionam com essa fumaça de diferentes maneiras, de acordo com suas crenças e experiências místicas, tanto individuais quanto coletivas.

Ao criar o projeto fui tocada por um certo impulso colecionador que me levou a buscar e listar as diferentes resinas de incenso, seu histórico e suas inúmeras propriedades, que podem ter naturezas variadas: sanitárias, curativas, religiosas, espirituais, mágicas ou esotéricas, além da primordial — a olfativa. Durante sua queima, as resinas são capazes de nos conectar com diferentes ancestralidades, além de ativar sensibilidades que nos conduzem por caminhos que não são traduzíveis de maneira objetiva. Qual o sentido, hoje, diferentemente de mil anos atrás, do encantamento produzido pela fumaça perfumada? Quando estamos na busca por certos estados psíquicos e mentais, envolvendo alguma prática espiritual, como saber se estamos no início, a meio caminho, ou se já passamos pelo seu zênite e não nos demos conta?

Visualmente, as resinas parecem pequenas pedrinhas sem valor, mas sua combustão as transforma em uma matéria volátil, liberando uma energia em forma de fumaça e perfume com propriedades que podem ser transformadoras para os seres vivos, de maneira inconsciente e nem sempre previsível. Compreendendo o projeto como uma coleção de experiências em estado latente, não é possível quantificar ou qualificar o afeto do indivíduo que usufrui da queima das resinas. O único que se pode afirmar, indiscutivelmente, é que uma fragrância o tocará, per fumum, aí residem sua beleza e seu enigma, como hipóteses em busca de uma tese.

Justamente, a simplicidade de seus componentes e a efemeridade de sua ativação constituem, tanto a complexidade de seu propósito, quanto a sua propensão para ser modificado, adaptado e reconstruído a cada vez em que é mostrado. Passível de ser experimentado em diversas situações, nos mais variados locais, Per fumum é assim mesmo, algo situado entre o concreto e o abstrato, energia volátil, perceptível em níveis nem sempre perceptíveis.

In 2011, the Per fumum project was activated on January 6 — the day on which Catholics traditionally celebrate the visit of the Magi to baby Jesus — as an incense-smoking action along Senhor dos Passos Street. This pedestrian commercial street is located in one of the largest open-air shopping centers in the world, in the historic center of Rio de Janeiro. This very popular area, which dates back to colonial Brazil, has been occupied for hundreds of years by Arab traders with Muslim origins, Jews, Koreans, Chinese, among other nationalities; it is still home to five Catholic churches, some of which were built by black brotherhoods and maintained by former slaves. The reactions of passers-by were as diverse as possible, at least as far as we could observe.

One doesn't have to profess any religious faith to recognize the scent that comes from incense smoke. However, human beings over the millennia have interacted with this smoke in different ways, according to their beliefs and mystical experiences, both individual and collective.

When creating the project, I was moved by a certain collecting impulse that led me to search for and list the different incense resins, their history and their countless properties, which can have a variety of natures: sanitary, healing, religious, spiritual, magical or esoteric, in addition to the primordial one — the olfactory. During their burning, resins are capable of connecting us with different ancestries, as well as activating sensitivities that lead us down paths that cannot be translated objectively. What is the meaning today, as compared to a thousand years ago, of the enchantment produced by scented smoke? When we're searching for certain psychic and mental states, involving some spiritual practice, how do we know if we're at the beginning, halfway there, or if we've already passed its zenith and haven't realized it?

Visually, the resins look like small, worthless pebbles, but their combustion transforms them into volatile matter, releasing energy in the form of smoke and perfume with properties that can be transformative for living beings, in an unconscious and not always predictable way. Understanding the project as a collection of experiences in a latent state, it is not possible to quantify or qualify the affection of the individual who participates in the burning of the resins. The only thing that can be unquestionably affirmed is that a fragrance will touch them, per fumum, and therein lies its beauty and its enigma, like hypotheses in search of a thesis.

Precisely, the simplicity of its components and the ephemeral nature of its activation constitute both the complexity of its purpose and its propensity to be modified, adapted and reconstructed each time it is shown. Experienced in a diverse range of situations, in the most varied of places, Per fumum is just like that: something situated between the concrete and the abstract, volatile energy, perceptible on levels that are not always perceptible.
