Em 2014 voltei ao antigo “complexo Carandiru”, que até o início do século 21 era uma espécie de sistema nervoso central do sistema prisional da cidade de São Paulo. Fui visitar o local onde trabalhei com o acervo fotográfico e percebi que o Museu Penitenciário logo ganharia prédio próprio! Em 2022, os curadores da exposição A parábola do progresso no SESC Pompeia, em São Paulo, me pediram para criar um diálogo entre Cicatriz, minha primeira obra de intervenção no ainda embrionário Museu Penitenciário, e o acervo ali atualmente exposto, em resposta às recentes interrogações sobre a noção de modernidade no Brasil do início do século XX. O resultado foi um amálgama do que vi no Museu com o que infelizmente ainda não recebeu a devida atenção: a fabulosa coleção de negativos fotográficos em vidro, ainda pulsando dentro das caixas de aço onde os deixei há quase 30 anos. Cabeças, corpos e membros ainda carecem de um sistema nervoso periférico que os abrace.

In 2014 I returned to the former "Carandiru complex", which until the beginning of the 21st century was a sort of central nervous system of the prison system in the city of São Paulo. I went to visit the premises where I worked with the photographic collection and realized that the Penitentiary Museum would soon get its own building! In 2022, the curators of the exhibition A parábola do progresso at SESC Pompeia, in São Paulo, asked me to create a dialog between Cicatriz, my first work of intervention at the still embryonic Penitentiary Museum, and the collection currently exhibited there, in response to recent interrogations about the notion of modernity in Brazil in the early 20th century. The result was an amalgam of what I saw in the Museum with what unfortunately has not yet received proper attention: the fabulous collection of photographic glass negatives, still pulsing inside the steel boxes in which I left them almost 30 years ago. Heads, bodies and limbs still lack a peripheral nervous system to embrace them.
